Beyond the Classroom

By offering a broad range of opportunities beyond the classroom, IHS Portland encourages students to engage with the wider community, explore new talents and interests, and maintain health and fitness.

Community Service

In keeping with a commitment to service and education of the whole person, IHS Portland requires 50 hours per year of community service. During the student’s first year at IHS Portland, staff and visiting speakers will discuss the importance and value of community service and provide information on a variety of community service projects. Students are expected to seek a variety of service programs during their first year and later settle on a community service project for the remainder of their time at IHS Portland.

Community Focus

Extracurricular enrichment activities will be regularly integrated into the program, and may include all-school assemblies, community service or special projects. These are intended to be fun and relaxing times when the entire student body meets to share a cultural or community experience, such as an outside speaker or performer.

Advisory & Communication with Parents

IHS Portland's advisory program ensures that students have an adult for counsel and nurturing. Students and advisors (teachers) meet for advisory lunch to discuss school events and procedures as well as review academic progress. Through the advising system, students receive encouragement and guidance from an adult who knows them well both in and out of the classroom. In this way, the advisor plays an important role for the parents. The advisor serves as the liaison between the school and student and is the first person a parent should contact regarding school-related activities or concerns.
