Preparing Future Leaders Through Languages
A rich language program is integral to IHS Portland’s curriculum. Through mastery of multiple languages, IHS Portland students develop a deeper appreciation of their own culture, as well as an understanding of others and their diverse cultures.
For students with prior language experience, instruction of selected courses at IHS Portland is provided in the following languages:
- French
- German
- Mandarin
- Spanish
Students may also pursue training in Arabic, Italian, Russian or other languages at Portland State University. In the Comparative World Culture and Aesthetic courses, students with sufficient preparation in an immersion language (French, German, Mandarin or Spanish) read material in the original language where appropriate. Studying with an international faculty of native speakers enables all students to be fluent in a least one language other than English by graduation.
Students do not need prior language instruction to enter IHS Portland.
